NSCDC arrests six suspected illegal miners in Edo

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested six people for allegedly engaging in illegal mining activities in Edo State. According to officials, the suspects were caught during a routine operation aimed at stopping unlawful extraction of mineral resources. The NSCDC said the arrest was part of its renewed effort to tackle crimes linked to illegal mining across the state.

Officers explained that illegal mining has become a major threat to the environment and local communities. It destroys farmlands, causes land degradation, and sometimes leads to dangerous conflicts. The agency added that those involved often operate without approval, use harmful methods, and deny the government revenue that should come from legitimate mining operations.

The NSCDC revealed that the suspects are currently being investigated to determine their level of involvement and whether they are part of a larger network. Equipment used during the illegal activities was also seized at the site. The agency said the investigation will help uncover more criminal elements who contribute to the growing illegal mining problem.

The NSCDC assured the public that it will continue its statewide operations to protect natural resources and maintain peace. It urged residents to report suspicious mining activities and warned that anyone caught breaking mining laws will face prosecution. The corps reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to regulate the mining sector properly.
