Lagos: LASWA, NIWA launch joint campaign to prevent holiday boat accidents

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) have started a joint safety campaign to reduce boat accidents during the holiday season. The two agencies said the end-of-year period usually comes with more passengers on the waterways, making safety awareness very important. Their campaign focuses on proper safety practices for both passengers and boat operators.

During the launch, officials explained that many holiday trips happen at night or during peak travel hours, which increases the risks. They emphasized the need for life jackets, proper lighting on boats, and adherence to speed limits. Boat operators were also warned against overloading and driving under the influence, which remain common causes of accidents.

The joint operation will include random inspections of jetties, patrols on busy waterways, and stricter enforcement of safety rules. LASWA and NIWA said they are working together to ensure passengers are protected and that waterways remain safe throughout the festive period. The agencies will also hold community awareness campaigns to educate regular water users.

Residents and boat users welcomed the initiative, saying it will help reduce avoidable tragedies. With Lagos depending heavily on water transport, especially during traffic-heavy seasons, many believe the campaign will improve confidence in the system. Authorities urged the public to cooperate with safety officers and report any reckless behaviour on the waterways.
