Implementing Tinubu’s directive on Police withdrawal more complex than it appears – Aide Akande

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, Mr. Akande, has explained that carrying out the President’s directive on withdrawing police officers from VIP security duties is not as easy as many assume. He said the instruction is clear, but the real challenge lies in how to enforce it without causing security gaps or creating new problems. According to him, the decision requires careful planning because it affects government officials, private individuals, and national security operations.

Akande noted that many VIPs depend heavily on police protection due to rising insecurity across the country. Removing officers abruptly could expose some people to serious risks. He added that the police force is already overstretched, and any major reassignment must be handled with caution to avoid weakening crime-fighting efforts in communities where officers are urgently needed.

He also stressed that the directive involves logistics, personnel restructuring, and new security arrangements that may take time to fully implement. Akande explained that the government wants to ensure that police officers are returned to core duties, but the transition must be done smoothly and professionally. He said the President is committed to reforming the security system, but reforms must be practical, not rushed.

Akande urged Nigerians to be patient and understand that this type of security reform cannot happen overnight. He called on stakeholders—police authorities, government agencies, and citizens—to work together so that the directive can be implemented successfully. According to him, the goal is to strengthen policing in the country, not to create confusion.
