Establishment of livestock development ministry not solution to protein crisis – Don tells FG

A university don has warned the Federal Government that setting up a new Ministry of Livestock Development will not automatically solve Nigeria’s rising protein crisis. He explained that the core problem is not the absence of a ministry but the lack of modern farming systems, poor investment in livestock production, and weak support for local farmers. According to him, without fixing these issues, the protein shortage will continue.

The don added that Nigeria must focus on improving animal feed, upgrading breeding techniques, and encouraging large-scale livestock farming. He stressed that many farmers still depend on outdated methods, leading to low productivity and high prices of protein foods like beef, chicken, fish, and eggs. He urged the government to channel funds into training, technology, and research to increase food supply.

He also pointed out that insecurity remains a major barrier affecting livestock farmers across the country. Many herders and farmers are unable to operate freely due to banditry and clashes in various regions. The expert said that solving security challenges will boost production far more effectively than just creating another ministry.

The don concluded by urging the Federal Government to partner with private investors, research institutes, and international development agencies. He emphasized that a combination of right policies, modern tools, and secure environments is what Nigeria truly needs to overcome its growing protein crisis.
