NAFDAC warns Nigerians over circulation of fake, unregistered edible oils

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the growing circulation of fake and unregistered edible oils across the country. The agency said some of these products are being sold in open markets without proper approval, posing serious health risks to consumers.

According to NAFDAC, many of the seized edible oils do not meet safety standards and may contain harmful substances. Officials explained that some producers repackage low-quality or expired oils and sell them as popular brands, misleading unsuspecting buyers.

The agency said enforcement teams are intensifying inspections and raids in markets, warehouses, and production sites. NAFDAC also urged traders to source products only from licensed manufacturers and warned that offenders will face strict penalties, including fines and prosecution.

Consumers were advised to always check for NAFDAC registration numbers, proper labeling, and sealed packaging before buying edible oils. The agency encouraged the public to report suspicious products to the nearest NAFDAC office to help protect public health.
