AFCON 2025: Atalanta coach laments Lookman’s impending departure

Atalanta head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has expressed concern over the possible absence of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He said Lookman is an important part of the squad, and losing him during a crucial part of the season will create challenges for the team. According to the coach, Lookman’s energy, speed, and goals are difficult to replace.

Gasperini noted that the club respects international duties, but the timing of AFCON often affects European teams. He explained that Lookman’s departure could force Atalanta to adjust their tactics and rely more on other forwards. He added that preparing early would help the team reduce the impact of his absence.

The coach also praised Lookman for his great form and professionalism. He said the Nigerian star has become a key figure in Atalanta’s attack, contributing goals and assists regularly. Gasperini believes Lookman will represent Nigeria well and hopes he returns from AFCON in good shape.

Despite the concerns, the coach said Atalanta will support Lookman’s national team ambitions. He emphasized that players deserve the chance to represent their countries. Gasperini concluded by saying the team will stay focused and ready to adapt as the tournament approaches.
