Why Tafawa Balewa, Ahmadu Bello died poor – Atiku’s ex-aide, Ardo

A former aide to Atiku Abubakar, Dr. Umar Ardo, has explained why Nigeria’s early leaders, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa and Sir Ahmadu Bello, died without wealth despite holding powerful positions. Ardo said both men lived simple lives and refused to use public funds for personal gain. According to him, their decision to stay honest proved their strong commitment to serving Nigeria instead of enriching themselves.

He noted that Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, focused on building the nation and maintaining unity during his time in office. Ardo explained that Balewa never chased material wealth and left behind no personal fortune after his death. Instead, he dedicated his energy to governance and national development, earning respect for his modest lifestyle.

Ardo also highlighted the example of Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the Northern Region. He said Bello was known for strict discipline and refused to accumulate property or money from government resources. Ardo described him as a leader whose integrity was more important than personal riches, making him one of the most admired figures in Nigeria’s history.

He concluded that the humility of Balewa and Bello should serve as a lesson for today’s politicians. Ardo urged current leaders to embrace honesty, transparency, and service to the people. He added that Nigeria would have made greater progress if the same level of integrity shown by the country’s founding leaders had been maintained across generations.
