The Muslim community in Plateau State has expressed deep concern over the loss of more than 4,700 of its members since 2001. The group said these deaths were linked to years of violent attacks, clashes, and unrest across different communities in the state. According to their leaders, many families are still grieving from the long period of insecurity that has affected both social and economic life in the region.
Community representatives explained that the killings have not only reduced their population but also created fear and distrust. They noted that several neighbourhoods once known for peaceful co-existence have become unsettled due to recurring threats. The group said that many victims were ordinary people going about their daily lives when these attacks happened.
The Muslim community appealed to government authorities to take stronger steps to protect all residents, regardless of religion or tribe. They stressed that only fair and consistent security measures can restore peace. They also urged leaders at all levels to avoid comments that worsen tensions, saying unity is needed to rebuild trust among Plateau’s diverse groups.
They further called for justice for victims and support for families who have suffered losses. The community believes that addressing the root causes of violence will help prevent future tragedies. They concluded by saying that peace in Plateau State is possible if everyone works together with sincerity and respect.
