Former President Jonathan Explains Why He Left Guinea Bissau On Ivorian Aircraft

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has clarified why he left Guinea Bissau aboard an aircraft provided by Côte d’Ivoire instead of one from Nigeria. The former president said both President Bola Tinubu and President Alassane Ouattara had planned to send planes for him, and he appreciated their quick support. Jonathan noted that the arrangement was made in good faith by both countries.

According to Jonathan, the choice of the Ivorian aircraft came down to logistics. He explained that Côte d’Ivoire is geographically closer to Guinea Bissau, making it easier and faster for their plane to arrive. He also mentioned that there is a long-standing diplomatic understanding between Francophone and Lusophone nations, which helped Côte d’Ivoire secure landing clearance earlier.

Jonathan further stated that because the Ivorian plane had already arrived and was ready for departure, his team asked the Nigerian government not to proceed with sending another aircraft. The decision, he stressed, had nothing to do with preference but was purely based on timing and convenience.

He expressed his gratitude to both West African leaders for their cooperation and support. Jonathan also used the opportunity to highlight the importance of regional collaboration and diplomatic relationships within ECOWAS, especially during moments that require swift movement and coordination.
