Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has criticized some Federal Capital Territory (FCT) officials for what he called overreach regarding school management. Wike stated clearly that, even if he were a federal minister, he would not have the authority to order schools to close in the FCT, emphasizing the need to respect legal powers and jurisdictions.
He noted that school closures should be based on proper consultation and valid security or health reasons, rather than unilateral decisions. Wike warned that ignoring established procedures could lead to confusion among parents, teachers, and students, affecting the learning process and the reputation of educational institutions.
The governor called on officials to focus on proper coordination with security agencies and educational authorities when making decisions that impact schools. He highlighted that decisions taken without clear authority could create unnecessary panic and could even worsen existing challenges in managing school safety and student welfare.
Wike further urged transparency and accountability in handling educational matters, insisting that government officials must act within their mandates. He advised that all stakeholders work together to ensure that students remain safe while maintaining continuity in learning across the FCT.
