WCQ playoff: ‘You won’t do that if I were captain’ – Obi Mikel slams Iwobi over controversial video

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has criticized Alex Iwobi over a controversial video that circulated after Nigeria’s World Cup Qualifier playoff match. The clip, which showed Iwobi in a relaxed mood despite the team’s disappointing performance, drew backlash from fans — and now from Mikel himself.

Mikel said the video was “disrespectful” to both the team and the country, claiming Iwobi would never have behaved that way if he were still captain. According to him, players must show seriousness and responsibility, especially during crucial qualifiers. He insisted that discipline and focus are key values expected from national team stars.

He further explained that Super Eagles players must understand the weight of national expectations. Mikel argued that social media behaviour can influence how the team is perceived globally. He added that Iwobi’s action came at a sensitive moment when fans were hurt by the playoff result.

Mikel urged the team to stay united but reminded younger players that wearing the national jersey requires maturity. He called for better leadership, both on and off the pitch, to avoid distractions that could derail future World Cup ambitions.
