Court convicts Nnamdi Kanu for belonging to proscribed group, inciting violence

A Federal High Court has convicted Nnamdi Kanu for being a member of a proscribed group and for making statements the court said encouraged violence. The judgment was delivered after reviewing several pieces of evidence presented by the prosecution, which argued that Kanu’s activities went against national security laws. The court ruled that his actions violated the conditions set when his group was banned.

During the hearing, the prosecution maintained that Kanu used his platform to spread messages capable of inciting unrest in different parts of the country. According to them, these speeches contributed to tension and fear in communities, prompting the government to tighten security in affected areas. The defense team, however, argued that Kanu was exercising his right to free expression.

The judge stated that freedom of speech does not permit any citizen to promote violence or support a group already declared illegal by the government. The court added that public figures must be careful with their words, as they can easily influence followers. With this ruling, the court held that Kanu crossed the legal line with his statements and affiliations.

The conviction has sparked strong reactions across the country. While some people say the judgment will help reduce unrest, others believe the case reflects deeper political and security issues that need to be addressed. The court announced that sentencing will follow in a separate session, where penalties will be determined according to the law.
