Turaki-led PDP regains control of party secretariat after ‘police teargased’ 2 serving govs

The Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken back control of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja following a tense confrontation on Monday. The situation reportedly escalated when police officers allegedly fired teargas at two serving governors who attempted to access the building during a clash between rival PDP factions.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident caused panic among supporters as both factions struggled for dominance over the secretariat. The Turaki-led group later announced that it had fully reclaimed the complex, insisting it remains the legally recognized leadership of the party.

The affected governors condemned the police action, describing the teargas incident as disrespectful and unnecessary. They argued that no elected official should be subjected to such treatment, especially while attempting to mediate in an internal party crisis.

Political observers say the event highlights the deepening division within the PDP as the party continues to battle leadership struggles and legitimacy claims from different camps. The situation has further intensified demands for reconciliation to prevent long-term damage to the party’s national structure.

Despite the chaos, the Turaki faction says it is now firmly in control and plans to begin activities to stabilize the party’s operations. Meanwhile, calls for independent investigation into the teargas incident continue to grow.
