Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has joined many prominent Nigerians in mourning the death of veteran journalist Dan Agbese. He described Agbese’s passing as a monumental national loss, noting that the respected media figure played a major role in shaping modern journalism in Nigeria. Akume said Agbese’s contributions went far beyond news reporting, as he consistently influenced public discourse with clarity and wisdom.
In his condolence message, Akume praised Agbese for his exceptional professionalism, courage, and dedication to truth. He recalled how the late Newswatch co-founder used journalism as a tool to hold leaders accountable while promoting national unity. According to him, Agbese stood out as one of the few journalists who combined integrity, deep knowledge, and strong ethical values throughout his career.
The SGF noted that Agbese’s writings and editorial work helped groom generations of journalists who admired his depth and fearless approach to national issues. He added that Agbese’s death leaves a gap that will be difficult to fill, especially at a time when the country needs strong and credible voices in the media. Many of Agbese’s colleagues and admirers have also been sharing emotional tributes across various platforms.
Akume extended heartfelt condolences to the Agbese family, the media industry, and all Nigerians who valued his contributions. He called for the preservation of Agbese’s legacy by encouraging journalists to continue upholding fairness, truth, and accountability—principles the late media icon championed until his final days.
