FG’s policies impeding academic freedom – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns over federal government policies, claiming they are restricting academic freedom in Nigerian universities. The union argues that regulations on curriculum control, funding, and staff appointments are limiting the ability of educators to teach and conduct research independently.

ASUU emphasized that academic freedom is crucial for the development of higher education and for producing skilled graduates who can contribute to national growth. The union warned that continued interference could weaken the quality of education and diminish Nigeria’s global academic reputation.

The union called on the federal government to engage with university stakeholders to create policies that support, rather than stifle, academic innovation and research. They stressed that proper dialogue is essential to prevent further disruptions, including strikes that have previously affected the academic calendar.

ASUU also appealed to students, parents, and the public to understand the importance of academic freedom and support the union’s efforts to protect the integrity of Nigerian universities.
