44 federal lawmakers demand Nnamdi Kanu’s release, write president Tinubu

A group of 44 federal lawmakers has formally written to President Bola Tinubu, calling for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The lawmakers said Kanu’s continued detention has contributed to rising tension and insecurity in the South-East. They urged the president to consider a political solution to the long-standing issue.

According to the lawmakers, freeing Kanu would help reduce agitation, restore peace, and open the door for renewed dialogue in the region. They argued that the situation has reached a point where political intervention is necessary, especially as legal battles continue to drag on. The letter also highlighted concerns about human rights and the need to rebuild public trust.

The lawmakers stressed that the matter has gone beyond legal technicalities and now requires leadership from the highest level of government. They pointed out that several respected groups, traditional rulers, and religious leaders have also appealed for Kanu’s release as a way to stabilise the South-East and encourage unity across the country.

As the call gains momentum, many Nigerians are watching to see how President Tinubu will respond. The push from such a large number of federal lawmakers shows growing political pressure around the case. Whether the president decides to act or maintain the status quo will likely shape political conversations in the months ahead.
