INEC records 2.3 million new voter registrations as Osun, Imo, Kano lead

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that more than 2.3 million Nigerians have newly registered to vote in the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise. According to the commission, Osun, Imo, and Kano States recorded the highest number of new registrations, reflecting strong public interest ahead of upcoming elections. INEC noted that the exercise has been largely peaceful, with thousands of eligible citizens turning out daily across registration centres.

INEC explained that the surge in new registrations shows that many Nigerians, especially young people, are becoming more engaged in the democratic process. The commission added that it is working to ensure that the process remains seamless, with more machines deployed to states experiencing heavy turnout. Officials also appealed to citizens to complete the registration steps properly to avoid complications during voter card collection.

Despite the progress, INEC highlighted challenges such as overcrowding in some centres and the spread of misinformation online regarding registration requirements. The commission urged Nigerians to rely on verified information from its official channels and to exercise patience as its staff work to capture everyone before the window closes. It also encouraged people who changed their location to apply for voter transfer early.

With registration figures still rising, INEC assured the public that it remains committed to delivering a transparent process. The commission reminded eligible citizens that voter registration is the first step in influencing the future of the country and urged them to participate fully before the deadline.
