A civil society group has criticized the federal government’s recent reversal on the 15% fuel import tariff, calling the U-turn unacceptable. The group argued that the partial suspension does not address the root problems of high fuel prices and foreign dependence on petroleum products.

According to the group, a complete ban on petrol imports would encourage local refining, create jobs, and stabilize prices for consumers. They also emphasized that continued reliance on imports undermines Nigeria’s energy security and economic sovereignty.

The organization further called on policymakers to prioritize investment in domestic refineries and incentivize local production rather than relying on temporary measures like tariff adjustments. They warned that failure to act decisively could lead to worsening fuel scarcity and public dissatisfaction.
