Your silence aiding unlawful case against Nnamdi Kanu – Family calls out NBA

The family of Nnamdi Kanu has criticized the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), accusing the body of maintaining a troubling silence over what they describe as an unlawful and unjust case against the detained IPOB leader. According to them, the lack of public intervention from the NBA gives room for continued violations of his fundamental rights, despite several court rulings ordering his release.

They argued that the NBA, as the foremost guardian of legal ethics and human rights in Nigeria, should not remain quiet when a citizen is allegedly being held in violation of both local and international laws. The family noted that Kanu’s prolonged detention has raised concerns globally, and the association’s silence sends the wrong message about the protection of civil liberties in the country.

The family further stated that the refusal of authorities to obey court judgments is an assault on the rule of law, stressing that the NBA has a responsibility to speak up when judicial orders are ignored. They urged the association to take a firm stance, insisting that the legal profession must defend the integrity of the courts and protect citizens from government overreach.

Calling for urgent action, the family appealed to the NBA to publicly demand full compliance with court rulings and ensure that justice is not delayed or denied. They maintained that silence at such a critical moment only emboldens unlawful actions and undermines confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
