State creation: ‘There must be balance, equity’ – South East stakeholders

Stakeholders from the South East region have insisted that any plan for creating new states in Nigeria must be guided by fairness, balance, and equity. They made the call during a recent meeting where leaders, groups, and community representatives discussed the region’s political future.

According to the stakeholders, the South East has long faced challenges because it has fewer states compared to other geopolitical zones. They argued that this imbalance affects development, federal allocation, and political representation. They noted that correcting the imbalance will help the region compete fairly with others.

The group stressed that state creation should not be rushed or influenced by political bargaining. Instead, they believe that proper consultation, community involvement, and national consideration should guide the process. They added that every part of the country must benefit equally from restructuring or any new state arrangements.

The stakeholders also appealed to the Federal Government to listen to the concerns of the region and address long-standing issues of marginalization. They said that ensuring equity in state creation will help strengthen unity, trust, and stability across the nation.
