Wike explains clash with naval officer over Abuja land dispute

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has explained what led to his recent clash with a naval officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, over a disputed plot of land in Abuja.

Speaking on Thursday before the FCT Executive Council meeting, Wike said the land in question was linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (retd). He criticized the retired officer for deploying military personnel to obstruct government officials carrying out enforcement duties.

Wike said it was unacceptable for government staff to be attacked while performing their lawful responsibilities, stressing that no one is above the law.

“How can I sit as a minister when government officials are attacked and beaten up — even directors?” he asked. “Many influential Nigerians have had similar land issues. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Army Chief T.Y. Danjuma both contacted me respectfully when such matters arose. They never sent soldiers to attack anyone.”

The minister also condemned the naval officer for allegedly referring to police officers on the scene as “bloody police,” calling the remark disrespectful and unprofessional.

“A commissioned officer should know better,” Wike said. “It’s these same government officials you’re insulting and attacking that made you what you are today.”

Wike maintained that his ministry would continue to uphold the rule of law in land administration across Abuja, regardless of who is involved.
