Political tension is brewing in Cross River State following reports of an alleged plan to impose former Governor Ben Ayade as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for the 2027 elections. The development has reportedly caused discontent among party stakeholders who describe the move as undemocratic and unfair.
According to sources within the party, the alleged plan is being pushed by a small circle of loyalists seeking to restore Ayade’s political influence after his defeat in the 2023 senatorial election. However, many members believe that imposing a candidate would undermine internal democracy and weaken the APC’s popularity in the state.
Party chieftains and youth leaders across Cross River North have expressed anger, warning that such a move could lead to internal divisions and defections. They argued that the APC must allow a free and transparent primary process instead of recycling old candidates.
One party member, who preferred anonymity, said, “We cannot continue to reward failure. The people want new faces and ideas, not political recycling.”
Stakeholders are now calling on the APC national leadership to intervene and ensure that all aspirants are given equal opportunity ahead of the 2027 elections.
