These Bandits Are Our Sons, Brothers, Fathers— Northerners Protest Against Trump

Residents from Northern Nigeria have protested against U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks labeling the region as responsible for the alleged persecution of Christians. Demonstrators argued that the label unfairly targets their communities and does not reflect the complex realities of Northern Nigeria.

The protesters carried banners and chanted slogans, insisting that those involved in banditry are not representative of the broader population. “These bandits are our sons, brothers, and fathers. They do not represent who we are as a people,” one participant stated.

Many Northerners expressed concern that international statements like Trump’s could deepen divisions within Nigeria and damage the country’s image abroad. They called for a more balanced understanding of the challenges facing the region, including poverty, unemployment, and local governance issues that contribute to insecurity.

Community leaders urged global leaders to engage with Nigeria constructively rather than labeling entire populations based on the actions of a few. They stressed the importance of unity, dialogue, and cooperative strategies to combat crime and insecurity without stigmatizing innocent communities.
