Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has reacted to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threats towards Nigeria, describing the situation as an exposure of unpatriotic and hateful elements within the country.
Speaking in an interview, Gumi emphasised that Trump’s statements revealed the existence of Nigerians who, according to him, do not have the nation’s best interests at heart. He argued that such individuals, through their actions and rhetoric, have allowed external forces to exploit Nigeria’s internal challenges.
Gumi further urged Nigerians to focus on unity and self-reliance rather than being swayed by foreign ultimatums. He said, “External threats only expose our weaknesses. True patriotism demands we strengthen our country from within, without relying on outsiders to intervene.”
The Islamic cleric also condemned the spread of panic and division following Trump’s statement. He stressed that patriotic citizens should prioritise national cohesion and resist narratives aimed at destabilising Nigeria’s socio-political fabric.
Concluding his remarks, Gumi called on both the government and citizens to tackle the root causes of insecurity, emphasizing that only internal solutions can bring sustainable peace.
