The just-concluded governorship election in Anambra has once again highlighted Professor Chukwuma Soludo’s strong political influence in the state. Despite expectations that the Labour Party and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would pose a major challenge, internal crisis and disunity within both opposition parties weakened their chances. Soludo and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) capitalized on the situation, securing dominance across major polling areas.
The Labour Party struggled with internal factional battles and lacked proper coordination, leading to poor voter mobilisation. Many supporters were confused about leadership direction and campaign strength, giving APGA a clear advantage. This division damaged the party’s momentum and left it unable to challenge Soludo’s grassroots political network.
The PDP also faced its own leadership rifts and organisational issues. Instead of presenting a united front, party leaders were engaged in internal power struggles that weakened their campaign machinery. As a result, many loyal voters shifted their support or stayed away, leaving the PDP unable to compete effectively against Soludo’s structured political operation.
Political observers believe Soludo’s success was not only due to opposition crisis but also his strategic planning and strong engagement with voters across communities. APGA party agents were present in most polling units, reflecting strong ground organisation and consistent voter outreach. This structure helped the governor maintain a commanding lead and frustrate rivals.
With the Labour Party and PDP struggling to rebuild, Soludo’s victory signals a continued APGA dominance in Anambra politics unless the opposition resolves its internal problems. Analysts predict both parties will need serious reconciliation, leadership stability and grassroots rebuilding to stand a real chance in future elections.
