Senator Chris Umeh has called for the arrest of individuals caught buying votes during the ongoing Anambra State governorship election. He expressed concern that such illegal practices could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
Speaking to journalists at a polling unit, Umeh urged security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take swift action against anyone attempting to manipulate the election through bribery. He emphasized that voters must be allowed to exercise their rights freely without external pressure.
Umeh also highlighted the importance of transparency in the electoral process, warning that vote-buying threatens democracy and could erode public trust in governance. He commended residents for coming out in large numbers to participate in the elections despite challenges.
The senator appealed to political parties to ensure that their campaigns remain lawful and peaceful. He reiterated that any form of electoral malpractice should be sanctioned to preserve the integrity of the Anambra governorship race.
He concluded by urging citizens to report any suspicious activities to the authorities, stressing that the fight against vote-buying is a collective responsibility for all stakeholders in the state.
