Akpabio, Barau blocking Tinubu’s nominee to head NERC – APC chieftain alleges

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau of working against President Bola Tinubu’s preferred nominee to lead the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). According to the party member, who spoke to journalists, the Senate leadership is allegedly delaying the confirmation process for reasons believed to be political and personal.

The source claims that President Tinubu already submitted the nominee’s name to the Senate, but the leadership has continued to stall the announcement and screening. The APC chieftain said such actions undermine the president’s authority and can slow down critical reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. He argued that blocking key appointments is harmful, especially when the country is struggling with electricity supply challenges.

The party leader also suggested that some lawmakers are trying to influence positions in federal agencies for their own interests. He warned that internal power struggles only weaken the ruling party and affect national development. According to him, Nigerians deserve improved power regulation, transparency, and accountability, not political games.

He urged Akpabio and Barau to put national interest above any personal or factional considerations. The APC member emphasized that the ruling party must stay united and support the president’s efforts to revive the economy, improve power supply, and build confidence in public institutions. He appealed for cooperation between the executive and legislative arms of government.

The APC chieftain concluded by urging the Senate to fast-track the screening process and avoid unnecessary delays. He said Nigerians are watching and expect leaders to act responsibly and support reforms that will help stabilise the country’s fragile power sector.
