A U.S. Congressman, Riley Moore, has announced plans to introduce a new resolution in the House of Representatives urging the Nigerian government to do more to protect Christians facing violent attacks. Moore shared the update on X, saying the resolution aims to condemn the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and support former U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to defend Christian communities. He stressed that many people have been killed because of their faith and that the world has ignored the situation for too long.
Moore said the resolution would push the U.S. government to apply diplomatic, economic, and security pressure on Nigeria to safeguard Christians and other vulnerable groups. The resolution also calls on Nigerian authorities to allow displaced Christians to return home, repeal blasphemy laws, and release people jailed for their beliefs. It encourages humanitarian assistance through trusted faith-based and civil groups and highlights reports that militants like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed herders have repeatedly attacked Christian communities.
The U.S. Congressman thanked Trump for “defending persecuted Christians” and expressed confidence that the initiative will help save lives. Trump recently issued a strong warning to Nigeria, saying the U.S. could cut aid or even take military action if attacks on Christians continue. Trump claimed he has instructed his War Department to prepare for possible action, stating any response would be “fast and vicious.” His comments have stirred intense debate internationally.
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted by saying the government protects all citizens regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background. The ministry stressed that Nigeria values religious tolerance and unity and described the country as one built on diversity. Officials insisted that Nigeria will continue to uphold peace and protect its people.
Moore’s upcoming resolution comes at a time when U.S. lawmakers are increasing pressure on the Biden administration to take stronger action on religious freedom overseas. Nigeria was previously listed as a “Country of Particular Concern” under Trump but was removed under Biden. Meanwhile, Senator Ted Cruz has also introduced a separate bill to sanction Nigerian officials accused of allowing religious violence or enforcing blasphemy laws. The situation has intensified global focus on Nigeria’s religious and security challenges.
