‘Distorted narratives’ – APC writes US Congress, dismiss Christian genocide in Nigeria

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has written to the United States Congress, dismissing claims of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria. The ruling party said recent reports suggesting targeted killings against Christians are misleading and based on distorted information. The party stressed that Nigeria’s crisis involves criminal and extremist elements attacking citizens of different religions and regions, not a state-backed religious war.

In the letter, APC explained that the security challenges currently faced by Nigeria—especially in parts of the North—are caused by terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts that affect both Christians and Muslims. The party noted that presenting the violence as a war against Christians alone creates a false international perception and threatens national unity. It urged foreign bodies to be objective and avoid being influenced by propaganda.

The APC also argued that the Nigerian government has made serious efforts to combat terrorism and protect all citizens. According to the party, the military is actively tackling criminal groups across the country, and many communities from different faiths have benefited from these operations. It added that Nigeria values religious freedom and that leaders from various religions occupy important government positions.

The ruling party further stated that some groups and individuals were deliberately spreading false narratives abroad for political or personal gain. It appealed to international partners, including the US Congress, to engage Nigerian authorities directly for accurate information instead of relying on biased reports. The letter emphasized that unity and cooperation are needed to address insecurity, not division.

APC concluded by calling for continued support from global allies in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. The party asked the international community to stand with Nigeria and help promote peace, mutual respect, and fair judgment. It assured that the government remains committed to protecting every citizen regardless of religion or ethnicity.
