Ahead of the upcoming governorship election in Anambra State, the Police Command has boosted its security operations with the deployment of helicopters, drones, and special tactical teams. The State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the development on Sunday while addressing journalists in Awka.
According to Orutugu, the additional personnel and equipment were approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to strengthen security presence and guarantee a peaceful and smooth election process across the state. He noted that the deployment aligns with the Nigeria Police Force’s strategic operational plan to ensure safety during the polls.
The Police Commissioner further revealed that the aerial surveillance units will work alongside ground patrol teams, intelligence units, and special police squads already stationed across Anambra. This joint effort, he said, will help monitor movement in sensitive areas, respond quickly to emergencies, and deter criminal activity during the election period.
Orutugu added that the surveillance helicopters and drones will monitor border communities, flashpoints, and key strategic locations, while local police units maintain strong patrols and checkpoints in all 21 local government areas. He expressed appreciation to the IGP for his commitment to ensuring safety and stability in the state.
With heightened police visibility and advanced monitoring technology, authorities are optimistic about preventing disruptions and ensuring a secure environment for voters to participate in the election without fear.
