Authorities in Yobe State have begun an urgent search after a death-row inmate escaped from the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum. The inmate, identified as Abba Hassan, reportedly fled the facility on October 31, 2025, raising security concerns across the state and beyond.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Yobe State Police Command, Hassan hails from Maiduguri in Borno State and was awaiting execution before his escape. Police spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim confirmed the incident and asked the public to assist law enforcement with credible information that could lead to his arrest.
The Police Command urged residents of Yobe and neighbouring states to stay alert. Officials warned citizens not to attempt to detain the fugitive themselves, stressing that doing so could be dangerous. Instead, anyone who has relevant information is encouraged to contact the nearest police station or custodial center immediately.
To boost the search efforts, the police also released an emergency contact number 08038452982 for the public to call with tips. Abdulkarim extended appreciation to residents for their cooperation so far, assuring that security agencies are working together to track down the escapee as quickly as possible.
Security officials say they remain committed to ensuring peace and maintaining public safety across the state. Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate how the inmate was able to flee from the highly secured facility.
