The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Kano Axis, has appealed to education leaders in Kano State to focus on reform and support for students instead of expulsion. The student body launched a new campaign called “Education Over Expulsion”, pushing for policies that encourage second chances for struggling students rather than dismissing them from school.
According to the statement signed by Comrade Mudassir Hamza Dankaka, the Public Relations Officer of NANS JCC Kano Axis, expelling students does more harm than good. The group argued that once students are removed from school, many of them end up on the streets, where negative influences are stronger and opportunities for rehabilitation are limited.
NANS highlighted that a high number of young people involved in crime and social vices in Kano are former students who were unable to complete their education. The association believes that repeating a class or undergoing academic support programs is a better option than cutting students off completely. “A failed grade should not be a death sentence,” Dankaka emphasized, noting that education remains one of the strongest tools for shaping responsible citizens.
The students therefore called on the Kano State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, heads of higher institutions, and other education stakeholders to adopt more compassionate academic policies. They stressed that students who find themselves struggling should be mentored, guided, and given another chance to continue instead of being expelled outright.
NANS also encouraged media houses, youth groups, and policymakers to join the campaign. The group stated that providing second chances helps build a peaceful and productive society, as young people who stay in school are more likely to contribute positively to their communities.
