The Ogun State Government has taken a major step toward improving healthcare services by launching the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP). The initiative aims to power hospitals and primary healthcare centers across the state with clean and reliable solar energy. Speaking during the official launch in Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun — represented by the Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Okubadejo — said the project will greatly reduce the high cost of electricity in health facilities and provide steady power, especially in rural communities.
According to the governor, the solar project will not only improve healthcare delivery but also help the environment by reducing carbon emissions. He noted that the program will create job opportunities for young people who will be trained as solar technicians and maintenance engineers. “With this intervention, our health centres will not only have light, they will have life,” he added.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, emphasized the importance of stable electricity in healthcare, stating that hospitals in the state currently spend over N100 million monthly on diesel and fuel. She explained that funds used to power hospitals could instead be spent on essential drugs, community healthcare support, and staff training. She revealed that while one in six primary health centres has already been solar-powered, the NISHP — supported by the European Union — will add solar power to 40 more facilities.
Representatives from the European Union also praised Ogun State for its commitment to the project, confirming that the state is one of five chosen to host the program. They explained that the initiative will strengthen public healthcare systems and assist underserved communities by providing constant power through solar micro-grids. The project will also benefit nearby small businesses, giving them access to clean and affordable electricity.
A steering committee and technical working committee were inaugurated to manage the project and ensure smooth implementation. Officials encouraged members to take their roles seriously and bring innovation and accountability to the assignment. With this solar initiative, Ogun State continues to lead in sustainable development and improved public healthcare delivery.
