Flamingos return home after after U-17 Women’s World Cup exit

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, have returned home after bowing out of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The team arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Friday morning alongside their officials. Their journey in the tournament ended earlier this week, but many Nigerians remain proud of their effort on the global stage.

The young Nigerian team was eliminated in the Round of 16 after suffering a 4-0 defeat to Italy on Tuesday night. It was a tough loss for the squad, who had shown promise in their earlier matches. Coach Bankole Olowookere and his players had hoped to push further, but they now turn their focus to rebuilding and preparing for future competitions.

Despite the exit, the Flamingos recorded three wins in four matches during the tournament. They showed strong determination and competitive spirit throughout, earning recognition and applause from fans back home. Their performance proved the growing strength and potential of women’s football in Nigeria.

Nigeria started the competition on a challenging note, losing their first two games against Canada and France. However, they bounced back impressively with a 4-0 victory over Samoa in their final group game, securing qualification for the knockout stage. The win restored confidence in the team and gave supporters hope.

Although they fell short of a deeper run, the Flamingos’ journey was filled with fight, growth, and valuable experience. As they settle back home, many football lovers believe that these young stars will rise again and make Nigeria proud in future tournaments.
