FG begins disbursement of tertiary institution staff support fund

The Federal Government has begun distributing funds under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a programme created to improve staff welfare and boost innovation and productivity in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The announcement was made by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, spokesperson for the Ministry of Education. The initiative is part of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), which was introduced after high-level discussions earlier in the year.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, this welfare scheme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Alausa confirmed that the project has moved from planning to full implementation, with over 9,000 staff already benefiting in the first year. This represents 28% of the verified 33,000 applicants from 219 tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The first phase of payments includes both academic and non-academic staff, with a 30:70 sharing ratio, ensuring that all categories of personnel in higher institutions are supported. Alausa praised President Tinubu’s efforts, noting that disbursement began within just four months of the programme’s launch—showing commitment to improving the education sector.

He added that the programme is not only about giving financial support but also about rebuilding the knowledge economy and motivating education workers. The fund aims to restore dignity, reward dedication, and support productivity in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The government believes that strengthening staff welfare will drive better academic results, enhance innovation, and support national development. With funding now rolling out, stakeholders see this as a major step toward reforming Nigeria’s education system and investing in its workforce.
