The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government against imposing a new fuel tax, saying the move could trigger tension across the country. The opposition party noted that Nigerians are already struggling with high living costs, and many families can barely afford basic needs.
According to the ADC, the administration must not “push Nigerians to the breaking point” by adding more financial burdens. The party argued that the proposed tax would worsen transportation expenses, increase food prices, and deepen hardship for workers, traders, and low-income earners. They stressed that any further pressure on citizens could lead to frustration and unrest.
The ADC advised the Federal Government to focus on policies that reduce suffering instead of introducing new taxes. They urged the President to prioritize economic reforms that support job creation, strengthen small businesses, and make essential goods more affordable. The party added that transparency and accountability in public spending are key to earning public trust.
In addition, the party called on lawmakers to reject the fuel tax proposal and protect the citizens they represent. The ADC insisted that leaders must listen to the pulse of the nation and avoid actions that could destabilize the country during this difficult economic period.
The party concluded by urging the government to adopt people-friendly policies and consult stakeholders before making decisions that affect millions of livelihoods. According to them, Nigerians need relief, not policies that make survival harder.
