2026 WCQ: I’m not impressed with Super Eagles – Sunday Mba

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Mba, has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Mba, who famously scored the winning goal in the 2013 AFCON final, said he expected much better from the national team.

Nigeria failed to secure automatic qualification after finishing behind South Africa in their group. The Super Eagles will now battle Gabon in November in the playoffs for a chance to reach the World Cup. For many fans and ex-players like Mba, this position is unacceptable for a country known as one of Africa’s football giants.

In a chat with Super Eagles media team member Ayo Olu Ibidapo, Mba did not hide his frustration. He said any true follower of Nigerian football would feel the same way about the team’s struggle. According to him, the Eagles could have avoided this situation if they won the matches that slipped away earlier in the campaign.

The former midfielder stressed that a team regarded as the best in West Africa should not be fighting for a playoff ticket. He added that Nigeria’s qualification is still uncertain, and that should be worrying for everyone who cares about the team.

With the playoffs coming soon, fans hope the Super Eagles respond on the pitch and secure their place at the 2026 World Cup. For now, Mba’s comments reflect the mood of many supporters who want to see stronger performances from the squad.
