Enroll practicing journalists in Edo in free Health Insurance- CRPP urges Gov Okpebholo

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) in Edo State has appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo to offer free health insurance to all practising journalists in the state. The call followed the sudden death of Mr. Adibe Austin Emenyonu, ThisDay newspaper correspondent, who passed away on October 17, 2025, in Benin City.

In a statement signed by CRPP chairman Dr. Samson Isibor and secretary C. Nkama, the group said many journalists in Edo State work in tough conditions and face financial strain due to rising living costs. They explained that with the economy under pressure, journalists struggle to afford basic needs like medicine and food.

Dr. Isibor noted that it has become extremely difficult for journalists and residents to cope with the high cost of living in the state. He urged the state government to support journalists by placing all Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)-registered members on allowances, saying many media workers earn very low salaries despite their important role in society.

The CRPP also asked the government to take urgent steps to reduce the rising cost of living in Edo. According to the group, life was more affordable in previous years, but current economic challenges have weakened purchasing power across the state. They emphasized that journalists are key to democracy and deserve better welfare.

While grieving with the NUJ and the Correspondents’ Chapel over the loss of Mr. Emenyonu, the CRPP praised him as a fearless and humble journalist who served with dedication. They vowed to participate in his burial rites and prayed for comfort for his family, colleagues, and the journalism community.
