Eight confirmed dead in multiple-truck crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

A tragic road accident occurred on Thursday morning along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Kara Bridge, resulting in the death of at least eight people. The crash, which happened around the Berger area, involved several trucks and caused a major scene on the busy route.

According to eyewitnesses, one truck fell into the Kara River while two others collided and caught fire. Thick smoke filled the air as motorists rushed to safety, leading to panic and heavy traffic around the expressway. The fire made rescue operations difficult as flames spread through the wreckage.

Officials from the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) quickly arrived to manage the situation. Firefighters and emergency workers battled the fire and worked to remove victims from the damaged vehicles. Television footage showed emergency teams trying to bring the situation under control.

In an official statement, LASTMA confirmed eight fatalities and explained that the accident involved a container truck, a trailer that exploded into flames, and another truck that spilled cartons of biscuits on the road. One more truck crashed into the bridge barrier, causing its container to drop into the river. The agency urged drivers to remain calm as recovery efforts continued.

The accident created massive traffic jams from Berger to Ogunnusi Road and toward Mowe, leaving road users stranded for hours. As of press time, emergency teams were still working to clear the burnt vehicles, remove the fallen container, and reopen the blocked sections of the expressway to restore normal traffic flow.
