ASUU: Nigerian govt releases N2.3bn to universities

The Federal Government has released N2.31 billion to federal universities to settle outstanding allowances owed to academic and non-academic staff. The announcement was made on Thursday by Kamorudeen Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President.

According to the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the money was processed through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, and universities will begin receiving payments immediately. He explained that the payment is part of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to improving staff welfare and strengthening the university system.

Alausa also revealed that the government is finalising the release of pension deductions and remittances to the Nigerian University Pension Management system. In addition, he stated that Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) will be fully included in university salaries by 2026, ensuring that lecturers receive the benefits regularly without delays.

He noted that funding for the Needs Assessment for Nigerian universities has continued and discussions with ASUU and other staff unions are ongoing. The minister emphasised that all agreements will be handled responsibly and within available government resources to keep the education system stable.

This development comes shortly after ASUU suspended its two-week warning strike following renewed negotiations with the Federal Government.
