Polio Eradication: Group commits to strengthening initiatives in Nigeria

Rotary International has renewed its commitment to ensuring that polio becomes history in Nigeria. According to the Rotary Public Image Coordinator for Zone 22, Region 27, Ibim Semenitari, ending polio remains a mission that must be completed, and the organisation is fully focused on sustaining efforts until total eradication is achieved.

Semenitari revealed this ahead of the official visit of Rotary Foundation Chairman and former Rotary International President, Holger Knaack, and his wife, Susanne. Their week-long visit, scheduled for November 1–7, 2025, will focus on reviewing progress, strengthening partnerships, and boosting health-focused activities across various communities in Nigeria.

She explained that the visit will deepen cooperation between Rotary, the Nigerian government, and health partners. During the mission, Knaack will meet with key leaders including officials from the Federal Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and other global health organisations working to fight polio and improve healthcare delivery.

Rotary International President-Elect, Yinka Babalola, added that the organisation’s goal goes beyond ending polio. He noted that Rotary aims to strengthen health systems and ensure that Nigerian families — especially mothers and children — remain protected from preventable diseases long into the future.

The global Polio Eradication Initiative has made great progress in Nigeria, but Rotary believes sustained action, community education, and partnerships are still necessary. With continued commitment, new interventions, and strong health systems, Nigeria is on track to secure a polio-free future for all children.
