Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs arrived at the National Assembly on Wednesday for their official screening by the Senate. They showed up around 10 a.m., accompanied by top-ranking military officers, as lawmakers prepared to review their qualifications and readiness for duty.
The screening, which was originally set for an earlier date, was moved to Wednesday, October 29, following a request from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The President asked the lawmakers to handle the process quickly to allow the new security leaders to resume work without delay.
In his letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu urged the Senate to confirm all nominated service chiefs as soon as possible. According to him, speedy confirmation is crucial for strengthening Nigeria’s security operations and ensuring smooth leadership transition in the armed forces.
One of the key nominations is General Olufemi Oluyede, who has been selected to serve as the new Chief of Defence Staff. Lawmakers are expected to assess him and the other nominees on their plans to tackle insecurity and protect the nation.
Senate President Akpabio explained that shifting the screening date was necessary to support the President’s request and make sure the military chiefs settle into their new offices quickly. The Senate is expected to conclude the exercise and announce its decision soon.
