Igbo town unions protest systematic Lagos demolitions, seek global intervention

The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has condemned what it calls the selective demolition of Igbo-owned buildings in Lagos State. The group accused the Lagos Government of unfairly targeting properties belonging to Igbo people and warned it will take the matter beyond Nigeria’s borders to seek justice.

Speaking at a world press conference in Umuahia, Abia State, ASITU President Chief Emeka Diwe described the demolitions as a serious violation of rights and a threat to national unity. He said the issue goes beyond breaking structures and touches the foundation of peace and coexistence in Nigeria. According to him, such actions contradict the vision of unity set by the country’s founding fathers.

Chief Diwe announced that the group will take legal action at international bodies such as the International Court of Justice, ECOWAS Court, United Nations Human Rights Council, and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. He stressed that the move is not because they distrust Nigerian institutions but because those responsible for protecting citizens’ rights have ignored the situation.

The association expressed sadness over the huge economic losses suffered by Igbo investors in Lagos. It said many affected buildings had valid approvals from the Lagos State Government before being demolished. Diwe criticized the lack of explanation, asking why law-abiding property owners should suddenly lose their investments despite following all government procedures.

He further described the affected properties as lifetime investments, including business plazas, shops, and warehouses that support families and empower young entrepreneurs. The group questioned why Igbos, who have contributed to growth across Nigeria, are being treated unfairly in a country they also call home.
