The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has confirmed the tragic death of a 300-level student of Banking and Finance, Peter Mafuyai, who was allegedly murdered by his friend, Nanpon Timnan David, a 200-level student from the Department of Agricultural Science. The incident reportedly occurred at Mafuyai’s off-campus apartment in Rusau, Farin Gada area of Jos North, on Saturday.
In a statement released by the University Registrar, Dr. Rejoice Songden, the school expressed deep sorrow over the incident while clarifying that it happened outside the university premises. Dr. Songden said the police have commenced investigations into the murder and assured that the institution is fully cooperating with security agencies to ensure justice is served.
“The Management of the University of Jos has received with great sadness the report of the unfortunate incident involving two of our students, which tragically led to the death of a 300-level student,” the statement read. “On behalf of the university community, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and pray for God’s strength to comfort them.”
Dr. Songden also addressed reports suggesting the incident took place on campus, describing them as inaccurate. She emphasized that the university had concluded the 2024/2025 academic session on August 30, and students were not in session at the time of the tragedy. Academic activities are scheduled to resume on November 10 for the 2025/2026 session.
The university assured parents, guardians, and the public that security within the campus remains intact. “We deeply regret this tragic event and assure everyone that adequate security measures are in place to protect lives and property in and around the university,” the Registrar added.
