Football icon Lionel Messi has revealed that his greatest footballer of all time (GOAT) is none other than the late Diego Maradona. The Inter Miami forward described Maradona as his ultimate idol and a timeless symbol of inspiration for Argentina and the world of football.
Speaking with NBC Sports (as shared by All About Argentina), Messi said that Maradona’s influence went far beyond the football pitch. “For us, Maradona was the greatest idol and a source of admiration for everything he represented,” he said. “Even though I was little and did not see much of him play live, Diego transcended everything.”
The Argentina captain went further to draw a parallel between Maradona and basketball legend Michael Jordan, describing both as larger-than-life figures who inspired generations within and beyond their sports. “Speaking of another sport, I think it was the same with Jordan,” Messi noted.
Messi also expressed deep respect for tennis superstars Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, calling them outstanding athletes who have redefined excellence in their own fields.
The World Cup winner’s remarks highlight his humility and admiration for greatness in all forms, showing that even the best recognize and celebrate excellence in others — across generations and across sports.
