The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has announced that voting will not take place in two polling units during the November 8 Anambra governorship election due to the absence of registered voters in those locations.
Prof. Amupitan made this known on Tuesday at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) held in Awka. He stated that INEC will deploy 24,000 personnel to conduct the election across 5,718 out of the 5,720 polling units in the state. According to him, the two affected polling units have no registered voters, hence there will be no need for voting there.
The INEC boss assured that the Commission has made adequate arrangements to ensure that the election is transparent, credible, and inclusive. He emphasized that logistics and personnel deployment have been well planned to prevent any disruptions during the exercise.
Speaking on behalf of ICCES, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, represented by Hassan Abdullahi, revealed that security agencies have strengthened measures to guarantee a peaceful and hitch-free election. These measures include improved intelligence gathering, increased surveillance, and the deployment of adequate security personnel across the state.
Ribadu also warned political actors and their supporters against violence, stressing that security agencies will not tolerate any act that could disrupt the election. He urged all parties to promote peace and respect the electoral process, assuring that anyone caught attempting to undermine the election will face serious consequences.
