The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed that it is currently reviewing applications from 170 foreign nationals seeking Nigerian citizenship. The revelation was made by the Minister of the Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who confirmed that the applications are undergoing due process and assessment.
According to the Minister, the review is part of the government’s commitment to ensuring that only qualified and credible applicants are granted citizenship. He noted that the process involves a thorough background check to verify the integrity, contribution, and alignment of the applicants with Nigeria’s national interests.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo explained that the Federal Government places high value on citizenship and sees it as both a privilege and responsibility, not a right. He added that the Ministry of Interior is working with relevant agencies to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the review process.
The Minister further emphasized that the Federal Government remains open to welcoming skilled and law-abiding foreign nationals who can contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development and cultural diversity.
He assured that once the review process is completed, the successful applicants will be presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for final approval in accordance with constitutional provisions.
