Legendary Afro-Juju singer, Sir Shina Peters, has revealed that he once pretended to be mentally unstable in public as part of a strategy to change people’s perception of him after he left Prince Adekunle’s band. The veteran musician made this shocking confession during an interview on The Honest Bunch Podcast.
According to the “Ace” crooner, his decision to leave Prince Adekunle’s band created serious controversy at the time. Many fans believed he had betrayed his mentor for financial gain, leading to harsh criticism and public outrage. In an attempt to repair his image, his record label and some media executives came up with a dramatic plan to win back public sympathy.
Shina Peters explained that he was asked to braid his hair for three days, wear torn clothes, and act like a mentally unstable person in public. “They took me to Oyingbo Market to buy ewedu while filming everything. I didn’t even know the full plan,” he recalled. The unusual stunt shocked onlookers, who began to see him as a victim rather than a villain.
The act didn’t stop there — the team also staged another scene in Badagry, where the singer was filmed behaving like a madman at a Julius Berger construction site. He was told to eat in public and act erratically to further strengthen the illusion. “All that drama was to change people’s perception and make them sympathize with me,” he added.
Sir Shina Peters noted that although the plan was extreme, it worked perfectly, helping him rebuild his image and reconnect with fans who once turned their backs on him. The episode, he said, taught him the power of storytelling, image management, and resilience in the entertainment industry.
