Newly promoted Sunderland pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Premier League season so far, defeating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to move into second place on the league table.
The Black Cats, who earned promotion through the Championship playoffs, have continued to impress in the top flight with strong performances against top sides. Chelsea appeared to be in control early in the match when Alejandro Garnacho put them ahead with a fine finish. However, Sunderland refused to back down.
Their equalizer came in the 22nd minute when Wilson Isidor capitalized on a long throw-in, showing great awareness to poke the ball past Robert Sanchez and silence the home crowd. The game looked set to end in a draw until Chemsdine Talbi delivered a dramatic stoppage-time winner, slotting calmly beyond the Chelsea goalkeeper.
With the victory, Sunderland now sits second on the Premier League table with 17 points from nine matches, just two points behind leaders Arsenal, who have a game in hand. The result marks another statement win for the newly promoted side, who continue to defy expectations.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on another disappointing performance that raises fresh questions about their consistency and ability to compete at the top level this season.
