President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in Nigeria’s military leadership as part of his ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s national security architecture. The changes were announced on Friday through a statement issued by Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, in Abuja.
According to the statement, General Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), replacing General Christopher Musa. The President also named W. Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, S.K. Aneke as the Chief of Air Staff, and I. Abbas as the Chief of Naval Staff. However, E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI).
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing service chiefs for their patriotic service and contributions to national security. He praised their leadership during challenging times and wished them success in their future endeavors. The new appointments, he noted, are aimed at injecting fresh energy and direction into the military to tackle emerging security challenges.
The President charged the new service chiefs to uphold the professionalism, unity, and discipline that define the Nigerian Armed Forces. He urged them to work collectively in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring peace across all regions.
All the new appointments take immediate effect, signaling a renewed focus on national security and defence strategy under Tinubu’s administration.
